Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Advances to W3C Proposed Recommendation

The Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group has published six Proposed Recommendations. Together, they allow systems using a variety of rule languages and rule-based technologies to interoperate with each other and with Semantic Web technologies. Three of the drafts define XML formats with formal semantics for storing and transmitting rules:

The National Information Exchange Model and Semantic-Driven Development

Since 2002, several US federal agencies have been deploying XML standards for the exchange of complex data sets. Led by a large project at the US Department of Justice and homeland security, there are now hundreds of states and vendors supporting an emerging XML standard called the National Information Exchange Model or NIEM. This presentation will look at the NIEM processes and show how they are being used to promote semantically precise data exchanges as well as promoting transparency in government.

The service elements are published into reusable components that can be stitched together into workflows. This vision of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) allows central metrics of use and stability, but it precludes a common use case familiar to Unix users.

Measuring Semantic Technology Adoption

I decided to conduct an informal survey in an attempt to gauge the current level of adoption and growth potential for Semantic Technology as an industry vertical. The results indicate to me that while progress is being made we still need to do a better job of delivering the message – this messaging problem is the number one reason why adoption of Semantic Technologies and Semantic Methodologies is proceeding slower than we had anticipated.

Finding and Visualizing Relationships

RelFinder, a new Adobe Flex-based application, has been announced by a collection of researchers from the University of Stuttgart, the Carlos III University of Madrid and the University of Duisburg-Essen. Additional contributions have been made by individuals from the University of Leipzig and AKSW.

The application can be configured to point to arbitrary RDF datasets exposed through a SPARQL endpoint, but uses several standard data sets out of the box. The default sources include:
