However the current information representation model utilized by UMLS-KS itself is not conducive to computer programs effectively retrieving and automatically and unambiguously interpreting the ‘meaning’ of the biomedical terms and concepts and their relationships.n nWe will introduce a transformation algorithm to produce an SKOS representation of the UMLS-KS that integrates UMLS-Semantic Network, and the UMLS-Metathesaurus complete with all its 143 source vocabularies as a unified body of knowledge, along with appropriate metadata to trace provenance and governance information. nOur proposal is based on the idea that formal and explicit representation of the UMLS-KS enables: 1) automatic consistency and integrity checking of local mash-up thesauri, 2) automated information interpretation, integration, and discovery, and 3) novel and creative repurposing, and extensions of the knowledgebase within a distributed and collaborative network of researchers.
